Don't be a victim was the topic of the Identity Theft Seminar held at Lauderdale County Commission on Aging. A wealth of information was shared with the attendees on the various ways to have your identity stolen . Sherri Mitchell, Assistant Bookkeeping Supervisor, and Beverly Sanders with Bank of Ripley pointed out several ways identity theft could affect your life; elder abuse through financial exploitation, scam artists, forgery and internet phishing to name a few. Brian Kelly, 25th Drug Task Force, preformed two very interesting demonstrations on ways to remove your information from a paper check and how to misuse a common mail receptacle. Chief Richard DeSpain and Investigator Shane Hodges from the Halls Police Department presented a very informative power point presentation to reiterate the importance of managing the flow of your personal information. The seminar stressed the point that skilled identity thieves may use a variety of methods to gain access to you data. Lauderdale County Commission on Aging plans to host a similar seminar in the fall to prepare citizens for the holiday season.
